India Post GDS Recruitment 2026: The Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, Government of India has released the Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) Online Engagement Schedule-II, July-2026 notification. Eligible candidates can apply online for Branch Postmaster (BPM), Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) and Dak Sevak posts in different offices of the Department of Posts.

The online application process includes One-Time Registration from 31 August 2026 to 19 September 2026, followed by online application submission and fee payment from 2 September 2026 to 21 September 2026. A two-day correction window will be available from 23 September to 24 September 2026.

Candidates who have passed 10th standard with Mathematics and English and meet the prescribed eligibility conditions can apply through the official India Post GDS portal.

Educational Qualification

Candidates applying for GDS engagement must have passed the Secondary School Examination (10th Standard) with passing marks in:

  • Mathematics
  • English

The qualification must be from a recognized Board of School Education under the Government of India, State Governments or Union Territories in India.

Candidates having an equivalent qualification from another board are not eligible according to the notification.

Local Language

Candidates must have studied the prescribed local language at least up to 10th Standard from a recognized board. The prescribed language varies according to the Circle.

For Odisha Circle, the local language is Odia.


Other Qualifications

Candidates should also have:

  • Adequate means of livelihood

These are prescribed as additional qualifications for GDS engagement.

GDS are paid Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA) rather than a regular Central Government employee salary.

The initial basic TRCA slabs mentioned in the notification are:

The notification states that TRCA carries an annual increase of 3%, subject to fulfillment of the conditions under the GDS Rules. GDS are also entitled to Dearness Allowance and certain other allowances and social-security benefits as applicable.

Important

GDS should not be considered equivalent to regular Central Government employees. The notification clearly states that GDS are not regular employees of the Department/Central Government and their emoluments and other entitlements are not at par with regular Central Government employees.


Branch Postmaster (BPM)

The duties of a BPM include:

  • Managing day-to-day operations of the Branch Post Office.
  • Handling India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) operations.
  • Marketing and promoting Department products and services.
  • Operating Customer Service Centre services.
  • Handling mail conveyance and delivery where applicable.
  • Performing combined ABPM duties when required.

A selected BPM is required to provide suitable accommodation for running the Branch Post Office at their own cost and must reside in the post village where the Branch Office is functioning.

Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM)

The duties include:

  • Sale of stamps and stationery.
  • Conveyance and delivery of mail.
  • IPPB deposits, payments and other transactions.
  • Assisting the BPM in postal operations.
  • Marketing and promotion of postal products and services.
  • Performing BPM duties when required.

ABPMs are required to reside within the delivery jurisdiction of the concerned Branch Office.

Dak Sevak

Dak Sevaks may be engaged in Post Offices, Sorting Offices, Mail Offices, Transit Mail Offices, Delivery Centres and other offices of the Department.

Their duties can include:

  • Sale of stamps and stationery.
  • Mail delivery.
  • IPPB transactions.
  • Handling mail bags and parcels.
  • Transhipment of mail bags.
  • Delivery of mail and parcels.
  • Assisting in the functioning of Post Offices.
  • Marketing and business procurement-related work.

Dak Sevaks are required to reside within the delivery jurisdiction of the Post Office to which they are attached.


The selection of candidates will be based on a system-generated merit list.

The merit list will be prepared using the marks obtained in the 10th Standard Secondary School Examination, with marks/grades/points converted according to the rules prescribed in the notification. The marks are aggregated to percentage with accuracy up to four decimal places.

Grade Conversion: For marksheets with grades/points, marks are calculated using a multiplying factor of 9.5.

Is there an exam?

No separate written examination is prescribed in the notification for shortlisting.

Shortlisting is based on the system-generated merit list prepared from the Class 10 examination marks.
